The campaign was hard and the blows against him from the Tory party uncivilized, to say the least. The comments by Prime Minister David Cameron were the most vulgar. As Richard Seymour of Al Jazeera reports, the PM “used parliamentary privilege - meaning he couldn't be sued for his remarks - to make allegations against Suliman Gani, an imam who had appeared on a platform with Khan.
Cameron asserted that Gani supported the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levangroup. When this was found to be false, the prime minister's office, almost with a perceptible shrug, claimed that Cameron had only meant to say that Gani supported "an Islamic state"”.
The issue of national security has often become, for many politicians, a means to cover racist sentiments.
The people of London, however, thought better of any campaign aimed at fostering Islamophobia and resentment against “Others” of any kind. Luckily, they seem to be miles ahead of their leaders: a blessing. Let’s hope the majority of Britain and of the globe follow suit.
That would a sign of real civilization.
