Takeaways from Obama’s last Nuclear Security Summit (Leore Ben Chorin. Steven Pifer, Brookings)

The 2016 Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) concluded on April 1—four days shy of the 7th anniversary of President Barack Obama’s Prague speech, in which, among other things, he announced a “new international effort to secure all vulnerable nuclear material around the world within four years.” The 2016 NSS was the fourth and final summit held in its current format. Obama expressed the hope that the 2016 summit would leave behind an enduring international nuclear architecture for securing highly enriched uranium (HEU) and plutonium.

Leore Ben Chorin, Brookings. Scoville Peace Fellow, Foreign Policy, Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence

Steven Pifer is director of the Brookings Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Initiative and a senior fellow in the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence and the Center on the United States and Europe in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings. A former ambassador to Ukraine, Pifer’s career as a foreign service officer centered on Europe, the former Soviet Union, and arms control. Pifer also had postings in London, Moscow, Geneva, and Warsaw, as well as on the National Security Council. At Brookings, Pifer focuses on arms control, Ukraine, and Russia issues.
