Liquidity (Umberto Eco)

In "Pape Satàn Aleppe" Umberto Eco writes that in the crisis of the concept of community emerges an excessive individualism; the other becomes antagonist, to beware. This "subjectivism" has undermined the foundations of modernity; this causes a situation where, lacking any reference point, everything dissolves into "liquidity". We lose the certainty of law and the only solutions for the individual without reference points are appearing (appearance becomes a value) and consumerism; a consumerism that makes objects of desire immediately obsolete.
