Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Sochi on May 6. A day earlier Japanese broadcaster NHK TV had reported that Abe will offer an eight-point plan on bilateral economic cooperation with Russia during the meeting which would include cooperation on oil and gas development and the modernization of seaports and airports in Russia's Far East. The relations between Russia and Japan had deteriorated after the Ukraine crisis when Tokyo joined US and the EU in imposing sanctions on Russia.
