Innocence lost, and its reasons (Bishnu Mohan Dash, South Asia Monitor)

India continues to host the largest number of child labourers in the world. According to the 2011 Census, India has 43.5 lakh labourers in the age group of five to 14, which accounts for 3.9 per cent of the total workforce in the country. The report says that out of the total population of child labourers, 3.9 per cent belong to the Scheduled Caste community and 6.7 per cent to the Scheduled Tribe community
