Global Food Security at Risk as Pollinator Populations Decline (Haweya Ismail, Future Directions International)

A recent report reveals that a large portion of the world’s pollinators are currently facing extinction. This is the first report by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), which is charged with tracking the ecological health of the planet. With as much as 75 per cent of the world’s food crops at least partially dependent on pollination, shrinking populations will have a substantial impact on food supply and livelihoods. The report will assist policy makers in making informed decisions to address the decline, allowing governments to make immediate efforts to safeguard pollinator populations for future food security.
