Nabih Berri’s incomplete proposals (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri said he contributed to the deal with Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil to end obstacles over the country’s offshore oil and gas reserves. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tammam Salam called for not rushing into the matter, as it affects future generations and he does not know the details. This means the issue will remain stuck between parliament and the cabinet.

In Lebanon, the presidency is the priority (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

Parliament speaker Nabih Berri’s recent proposal to hold parliamentary elections before electing a president is due to despair with political parties and some of his allies, which prevent electing a president, boycott parliamentary sessions, involve Lebanon in foreign wars, and suggest proposals that violate the constitution

Clovis Maksoud and Arabism (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

Perhaps the recent death of Clovis Maksoud, a strong advocate of Arabism, sheds light on the fact that the concept of Arabism is fading away amid Islamist domination

Elect a Lebanese president by majority (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

A futile dialogue about legislation and its validity has been ongoing in Lebanon. The dialogue is not based on logic, the constitution, or the interests of the state and its people. There are conditions and counter-conditions as each party plays to win a political round.

Demagoguery does not serve any cause (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

We at An-Nahar newspaper were the first to voice rejection of Asharq al-Awsat’s April 1 caricature depicting the Lebanese state as an “April fool.” We rejected it because it insulted our flag, country, and thus all of us. The Lebanese people still adhere to our identity, country, flag, Arabism, relations with Arab brotherly countries, and openness with the West.

Who is to blame for Lebanon’s media crisis? (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

The Lebanese media, particularly print journalism, shouldn’t be ashamed of admitting that the crisis in the industry has reached unprecedented levels. The role of the media is to address people’s problems and seek to find solutions. However, in Lebanon it is now drowning in its own set of problems and no real attempts are being made to resolve them.

March 14, in defense of our great Lebanon (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

No one in Lebanon “owns” the historical day of March 14. It is neither the property of parties competing over it, nor an occasion to hold festivals and announce stances. March 14 is not a political alliance to hold, or agree to hold, parliamentary and municipal elections.

Lebanon must not repeat its experience with Palestinian refugees (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

In an op-ed published last month, Yezid Sayigh, senior associate at the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut, discussed smarter assistance for Syrian refugees. This appeared following the international donor conference, which was held in London earlier that month and which pledged more than $11 billion to assist Syrian refugees and the internally displaced people in 2016-2020.

Prevent chaos for the sake of Lebanon and Arabs (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

Amid recent measures taken by Gulf countries against Lebanon, the government has been incompetent in addressing deteriorating relations between Beirut and Riyadh. Such ties were always brotherly, yet hundreds of Lebanese working in the Gulf are now worried about their fate. Lebanese people fear economic, social and political repercussions as their government’s attempts to contain the situation have failed.

Hezbollah must prove it is Lebanese (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

In their brotherly relations, Gulf countries have asked nothing from Lebanon but unity of Arab opinion and positions while confronting the many challenges facing the Arab world. The biggest challenge is Israel. During all the times it attacked Lebanon, only Arab countries - such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) - stood by us to rebuild what was destroyed.

Why Saad Hariri should stay in Beirut (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

Perhaps Future Movement leader Saad Hariri’s aides, advisers and others around him have told him of the people’s desire that he stay in Beirut, after he made a surprise visit to attend the 11th commemoration of the assassination of his father Rafiq.

Hezbollah has no merits in Lebanon (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

Lebanese parties that support Hezbollah are aware that they need it to provide them with security and money to survive, after living under Syrian tutelage. They also need the votes of Hezbollah supporters whenever there are elections, given that their numbers are great, and the Shiite party can control and mobilize them.
