In Lebanon, the presidency is the priority (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

Parliament speaker Nabih Berri’s recent proposal to hold parliamentary elections before electing a president is due to despair with political parties and some of his allies, which prevent electing a president, boycott parliamentary sessions, involve Lebanon in foreign wars, and suggest proposals that violate the constitution

Who is to blame for Lebanon’s media crisis? (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

The Lebanese media, particularly print journalism, shouldn’t be ashamed of admitting that the crisis in the industry has reached unprecedented levels. The role of the media is to address people’s problems and seek to find solutions. However, in Lebanon it is now drowning in its own set of problems and no real attempts are being made to resolve them.

March 14, in defense of our great Lebanon (Nayla Tueni, Al Arabiya)

No one in Lebanon “owns” the historical day of March 14. It is neither the property of parties competing over it, nor an occasion to hold festivals and announce stances. March 14 is not a political alliance to hold, or agree to hold, parliamentary and municipal elections.

The end of Pax Lebanon? (James Denselow, Al Jazeera)

It's been a pretty busy month for Lebanese-Saudi relations. The slashing of billion dollars' worth of aid - mainly for the Lebanese security forces - the issuing of travel warnings for Saudi citizens to avoid the country and the declaration that Hezbollah is a "terrorist" group, mark a significant new direction of travel from Riyadh.

Lebanon and the 'invasion of idiots' (Diana Moukalled, Al Arabiya)

“Social media gives legions of idiots the right to speak when they once only spoke at a bar after a glass of wine, without harming the community,” said Italian writer Umberto Eco, who passed away last month. “Then they were quickly silenced, but now they have the same right to speak as a Nobel Prize winner. It’s the invasion of the idiots.”

Social media has provided platforms for expression and helped reflect public opinion, yet the expression “invasion of the idiots” seems right most of the time. Is this not proven by the hashtags people use? We confront this truth almost daily. In Lebanon, for example, there are hashtags that are good for nothing except mobilizing and inciting people.

Will Lebanon become a state once again? (Mshari Al Thaydi, Al Arabiya)

Saudi Arabia’s suspension of aid worth $4 billion to Lebanon’s army and Internal Security Forces derives from Riyadh’s declining relationship with the Lebanese state since the hegemony of pro-Iran Hezbollah and its follower, the Free Patriotic Movement led by Michel Aoun. It is not true that Riyadh has had enough of Lebanese media criticism - despite this, Saudi support continued because it was aware that Lebanon is diverse religiously and politically.

Standing by Lebanon and feeling bitter (Mohammed Fadah Al-Harthi, Arab News)

Saudis have a trait which is an old and inherited Arab one of not pointing out the support they give to others lest it looks like bragging. Unfortunately, the political realities of international relations have caused this to change. Thus, Saudi Arabia was forced to disclose the amount of aid to Iraq during the war in Kuwait. The numbers led to shocked amazement in Baghdad even more than in Riyadh.
