Maldives: It's back to square one (N. Sathiya Moorthy, South Asia Monitor)
Even as reactions continue to pour in over the weekend on Maldives’ decision to exit the Commonwealth, alleging ‘unfair and unjust treatment’, the leadership of President Abdulla Yameen has moved on with the next political move, this one nearer home. On Friday, when the two governments announced the visit, the Maldivian Correctional Service also rejected the plea of the jailed former President Mohammed Nasheed for an extension of his ‘medical leave’ in the UK, reiterating that the supporting documents were defective and incomplete.

Rarely do governments and Prime Ministers walk the extra-mile to back a trade or technical cooperation agreement with another country. It is more so in the case of sensitive neighbours, where domestic politics and geo-strategic concerns have remained a nagging bilateral problem. Not now in the case of Sri Lanka and its larger, northern neighbour, India, or so it would seem.
