The United Nations turned 70 last year, a lifetime according to life expectancy projections. It has had eight secretaries-general, all men. Each one has contributed to the organization according to his own personality, how he viewed the role of the secretary-general, and within the context of the times, during the Cold War and following its very abrupt end in the early 1990s.
