The news was greeted with jubilation: after decades of conflict in Sudan between the Arab-dominated north and the predominantly Christian, black south, South Sudan had won independence. An overwhelming majority – over 98% – of South Sudanese supported the move, hoping it would put an end to Africa’s longest civil war.
