We’re a pessimistic bunch. Last year, pollsters asked people in 17 countries whether they thought the world was getting better or worse. In all but two countries – China and Indonesia – more than 50% of people said things were deteriorating. In fact, in some places, as many as 81% of people said life was better in the good old days.

South Sudan: ‘One of the most horrendous human rights situations in the world’, says UN (Stéphanie Thomson, WEF)
The news was greeted with jubilation: after decades of conflict in Sudan between the Arab-dominated north and the predominantly Christian, black south, South Sudan had won independence. An overwhelming majority – over 98% – of South Sudanese supported the move, hoping it would put an end to Africa’s longest civil war.
