This week, the UAE’s Abdul Aziz al-Ghurair Fund for Education announced a $1.1 billion fund dedicated to underprivileged youth in the Middle East. The fund will provide 15,000 young people with access to tertiary education at the region’s top universities, as well as mentoring schemes and access to internships. This comes at a time when the region is struggling to provide young people with the opportunities they deserve.

Life lessons from Dame Zaha Hadid (Yara al-Wazir, Al Arabiya)

Dame Zaha Hadid passed away this week, but her designs will live on to inspire architects for decades to come, and the messages she taught the public throughout her life can be carried forward by millions. I have been following her work since I was introduced to it at the age of 16 while passing through London’s Hyde Park. As a young Arab woman living in the West, I have learned a lot from her life.

When it comes to female Arab leaders, the numbers are sparse. From politics to the boardroom, the participation of women trails well below the international average. In the gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member countries, a study by Hawkamah showed that women occupy a mere 1.5 percent of board seats across companies in the GCC, compared to the global average of 15.3 percent.

In the Middle East, more women enrol in degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related subjects than men, a study by The Economist revealed recently. February 11 this year was also marked as the first ever International Day of Women and Girls in Science. One of UNESCO’s objectives in setting this day was to encourage more women to enter STEM-related studies and jobs.
