Liberating Mosul will not solve Iraq's problems (Luke Coffey, Al Jazeera)

An Iraqi soldier holds up his rifle in front of a building destroyed by an airstrike in a village south of Mosul, Iraq [Reuters]

The liberation of Mosul is in the early days of execution, but as the central government in Baghdad and policymakers in the US will soon find out, liberating the city and kicking out ISIL (also known as ISIS) will be the easy part

The West needs to keep NATO's door open to new members (Luke Coffey, Al Jazeera)

Recently, Douglas Lute, the US Ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, sent shockwaves through much of Eastern Europe when he suggested that NATO would not be taking any new members in the near future. His excuse: because it might antagonise Russia.

Yemen: Is a political deal on the horizon? (Luke Coffey, Al Jazeera)

Armed Houthi followers rally against Saudi-led air strikes in Sanaa, Yemen [REUTERS]

Earlier this month the US Navy confiscated about 1,500 Kalashnikov rifles and 200 rocket-propelled grenade launchers thought to be for Houthi rebels in Yemen. This follows the recent seizure of thousands of more weapons and rounds of ammunition by the French and Australian navies heading to Yemen.

South Ossetia referendum is not legal (Luke Coffey, Al Jazeera)

Members of Georgian NGOs take part in a rally against what they claim is a de facto annexation by Russia of Georgian territories close to Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia [AFP]

On April Fool's Day, the Russian News Agency TASS published a story claiming that South Ossetia, the Russian occupied breakaway region in the Republic of Georgia, is opening a diplomatic mission in Italy.

Nagorno-Karabakh is not a localised conflict (Luke Coffey, Al Jazeera)

Far from being just a localised conflict watched by many with curiosity on our television screens, the war in Nagorno-Karabakh is actually a tangled web of competing geopolitical interests from across the region.

Russia continues to oppress Crimea's Tatars (Luke Coffey, Al Jazeera)

More than two years have passed since Russia invaded and illegally annexed Ukraine's Crimea Peninsula. Since then, the Tatar population there remains under pressure, marginalised, and in many cases, persecuted by Moscow.

The Nuclear Deal Has Already Made Iran Stronger (Luke Coffey, The National Interest)

Back in 2011, I attended a meeting with a senior member of the royal family in one of the Gulf states. He posed a simple question that has stuck in my mind ever since: “If President Obama was willing to throw Poland and the Czech Republic under the bus [over the issue of missile defense] for better relations with Russia, why wouldn’t he do the same thing to us for better relations with Iran?”

Abu Omar al-Shishani [Screengrab from YouTube]

If media reports are to be believed, Tarkhan Batirashvili, who goes by the nom de guerre Abu Omar al-Shishani - Omar the Chechen - has been killed by a United States air strike in Syria. He is one of the most well-known foreign fighters in ranks of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

A ceasefire in Syria is pure fantasy (Luke Coffey, Al Jazeera)

Monday's announcement by the US and Russia of a so-called "cessation of hostilities" in Syria is the second such proposal in as many weeks. The first proposal for a cessation of hostilities ended last week before it even began. But if all goes to plan, the fighting in Syria will stop, or at least be drastically reduced, starting midnight, Saturday, February 27.

Aleppo can be a turning point in Syria's civil war (Luke Coffey, Al Jazeera)

During the 48 hours of the failed Syrian ceasefire talks in Geneva last week, Russian planes conducted 320 air strikes in Aleppo. In truth, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was never serious about a ceasefire, and neither was his partner in crime Vladimir Putin, the Russian president.
