World Teachers’ Day: A time to recognize the challenges facing our teachers (Eileen McGivney, Jenny Perlman Robinson, Priyanka Varma, Brookings)

Teachers are one of the most important factors affecting whether and what children learn. Outside of immediate families, teachers have the greatest influence on young women and men during their transition to adulthood, while the quality of teaching has a significant impact on children’s learning in school. In a study of 15,000 teachers across Latin America, students’ learning outcomes were more influenced by a strong or weak teacher than by a bad or good school.

Millions learning: Scaling up quality education in developing countries (Jenny Perlman Robinson, Rebecca Winthrop, with Eileen McGivney, Brookings)

Around the world, countries are grappling with how to scale quality education for their children and youth. Quality education is at the center of a nation’s progress, and it is also enshrined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which 193 countries have recently committed to support. While the spread of schooling over the past 150 years is one of the most widely successful “going to scale” stories, this expansion too often has been met with little mastery of core academic content and higher-order thinking skills.
