Iran’s Kurdish party and the challenge of ethnicity (Camelia Entekhabi-Fard, Al Arabiya)

The Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI), which kept its armed struggle with the government in Tehran suspended for 27 years, has suddenly announced the resumption of their “armed action”. Clashes during the last few weeks between KDPI members and Iran’s Security Forces have left several dead on both sides. The armed members of KDPI even crossed borders from Iraq’s Kurdistan in Erbil and entered into Iranian territories.

Why Pakistan is key to Afghan peace (Camelia Entekhabi-Fard, Al Arabiya)

On May 21, the United Sates struck a vehicle in Pakistan, killing its passenger Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour, an extremely dangerous man who nine months ago became leader of the Taliban. After the killing of his predecessor Mullah Mohammad Omar was revealed, Mansour withdrew from peace talks with the Afghan government and swore to increase attacks. Efforts to resume the talks failed

What are Iranians doing in Syria? (Camelia Entekhabi-Fard, Al Arabiya)

When I was a child in 1980, Iran and Iraq were fighting each other in one of the 20th-century’s bloodiest wars, which left almost half a million dead on both sides. Images of returning coffins, funerals and emergencies are not easy to forget, and not an experience one wants to see again. Although Iran was dragged into the war, I am sure it was painful and difficult for both sides.

Why Nowruz face-off poses a new challenge for Rowhani (Camelia Entekhabi-Fard, Al Arabiya)

Nowruz day (the vernal equinox and the first day of the year in the Iranian calendar) is considered the most festive and celebratory day in the country. Family and friends who may have fallen out with one another set their differences aside and reconcile on this occasion. Keeping this custom in mind, the messages of New Year’s greeting delivered by politicians are usually conciliatory while also elaborating a general policy that the supreme leader and the president like to pursue.

Here’s why Geneva talks can succeed (Camelia Entekhabi-Fard, Al Arabiya)

The opening day of Syria peace talks in Geneva ended with a major surprise. It was announced that Russia is withdrawing its forces from Syria, beginning March 15, the following day of the talks. President Vladimir Putin said his country’s military intervention had largely achieved its objectives, which essentially meant he has helped Bashar al-Assad gain an upper hand in his talks with the opposition.

And the award goes to Hashemi Rafsanjani! (Camelia Entekhabi-Fard, Al Arabiya)

Alongside the 88th annual Academy Awards ceremony or Oscars on Feb. 28, another race was in progress in Iran, which had important global implications. While the Oscars presenters read out names of Academy Award winners, in Iran names of winners of the twin elections started trickling in.

Fate of Iran’s next parliament may already be sealed (Camelia Entekhabi-Fard, Al Arabiya)

While asking voters to participate at two upcoming elections to nominate the next Iranian parliament and the country’s Assembly of Experts, Iran’s supreme leader did not shy away from saying what outcomes he expects.
