With the spectre of a Trump presidency on the wane, governments everywhere—especially the allies of the US—are breathing a collective sigh of relief. What they really need to do is to begin thinking about the strategic and diplomatic direction that a Clinton presidency might take. For, as Oscar Wilde noted, in his sardonic way, ‘when the gods wish to punish us, they answer our prayers’.

After the Brexit party—what’s the hangover cure? (Allan Behm, The Strategist)

The heat of the Brexit result has given way to a cold dawn light revealing the enormity of the British decision. The nation is deeply divided, not just along traditional class lines, but between youth and their ‘boomer’ parents, between London and the rest, between the great land owners and the small leasehold farmers, between agricultural producers and the unemployed in the formerly great industrial cities, and between England and Scotland—the divide between England and Northern Ireland being of equal significance.

Britain’s global strategic posture: the Brexit wrecks it (Allan Behm, ASPI The Strategist)

It’s astonishing to see the conservative inheritors of Churchill’s mantle clamouring to escape the European Union. It‘s even more astonishing to see the looming destruction of a grand alliance—the purpose of which was to prevent the wars that smashed Europe twice in fifty years—by the forces of nationalism, xenophobia and protectionism. These were the very forces that set Europe on its road to hell in the first place.
