Nepal. Shrinking the Himalayas (Salman Haidar, South Asia Monitor)

The great Himalayas are India’s immemorial frontier. Political control at the margins has fluctuated and the mountains themselves have been contested, but the formidable mountain chain is India’s bastion. It is not impregnable, as has been shown on several occasions, and it has not always deterred outsiders. Yet this is the great divide between India and the regions beyond, and is the great source of the beliefs and the legends that make India distinctive. The perennial rivers that support life in India rise in these mountains and are vital for its continued existence and prosperity. The links between the great mountains and the vast plains, and of the people who live there, are of unique intimacy and the two are barely to be separated one from the other.
