After four months of post-election uncertainty, secrecy and speculation, Myanmar's houses of parliament yesterday confirmed Htin Kyaw – a trusted aide and former schoolmate of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party leader Aung San Suu Kyi – as the country's next president. He will assume office on 1 April, marking the first democratic transfer of power in Myanmar since 1960.
