In September 2015, as international leaders were preparing to meet in New York for the historic adoption of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, which enshrined the goal to halt deforestation, haze from forest fires swathed much of Indonesia. The fires had been lit to clear forest, and were fuelled by exceptionally dry weather conditions. They represented an environmental disaster with lasting and significant health consequences.
