Over the next few weeks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his advisers will have to take a hard look on how to proceed with India-Pakistan bilateral relations. The first decision to be taken relates to Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s visit to Islamabad for the SAARC home ministers’ meeting to be held on August 4. Confirming that the meeting is being held, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup cautiously said Singh's visit was under consideration.

In the first two years of his term Prime Minister Narendra Modi has devoted time, energy and attention to the conduct of foreign policy. He has sought to enlarge India's influence through frequent interaction with his global peers in bilateral meetings. Modi's participation in international and multilateral conferences has conveyed the country's position in impressive, though pragmatic, interventions. In this largely successful canvas there is a one major dark spot: utter confusion that has prevailed in the pursuit of the nation's Pakistan policy.

The long interaction of the Indian and Pakistani foreign secretaries in New Delhi on April 26 would have covered a lot of ground on the current state of bilateral relations. However, the fact that the two diplomats did not come together before the media and instead gave aggressive individual statements shows that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s December Pakistan initiative is in deep trouble.
