At its upcoming annual meeting, scheduled for late October, the Valdai International Discussion Club plans to hold a special session entitled If the USSR Hadn’t Collapsed. On the one hand, this theme represents a novel approach for a club specializing in analyses of current and prospective global political and economic trends. For obvious reasons, we did not focus on historical retrospectives, let alone historical reconstructions.

At St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in June 2016, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi reiterated his government’s firm belief that the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol model of conflict resolution could serve to get past the current impasse in the Ukraine.
Some form of power-sharing arrangement could pave the way to reconciling the conflict in the Ukraine and in relations between the EU and Russia is a valid one. A close look reveals that territorial conflicts, or at least the potential for conflict, are present in many parts of Europe and European states have looked for ways to reconcile the organisation of political power with competing demands from different social groups.

MH17 REPORT: WHAT DID THEY DO THE WHOLE YEAR? (Valdai Discussion Club)
On September 28, 2016, the MH17 Joint International Criminal Investigation Team under the chairmanship of the Netherlands prosecutor's office issued a report on the investigation of Boeing-777 aircraft crash in the Donetsk region on July 17, 2014. The main conclusion is that MH17 was downed by Buk SAM, which was delivered to Ukraine from Russia, and after the missile launch returned to Russia.
