How Pokémon Go is the new bogeyman (Khaled Almaeena, Al Arabiya)

In every period of history there are characters or issues that seem to disturb people and cause anxiety or fear. They are referred to as “bogeymen”. There have been many such bogeymen in history as a result of threats that people perceived to be real and dangerous.

We need a vibrant and critical media (Khaled Almaeena, Al Arabiya)

They say eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. And that cannot hold more true in this day and age where states and institutions are confronting natural manmade challenges. How then can society face these threats if it is unaware of them?

Are the Arabs asking for too much? (Khaled Almaeena, Al Arabiya)

Browsing through a copy of the International New York Times on a flight from Dubai to Jeddah, I read Roger Cohen’s article “The Arab Withering”. He reviews Robert F. Worth’s book A Rage for Order. Cohen has a style of his own

The Saudi Binladin Group deserves support (Khaled Almaeena, Al Arabiya)

Three headlines appeared in three different newspapers last week: “Ministry to ensure fair deal for Binladin staff”; “Quit or wait, Binladin tells 17,000 Saudi staff” and “Saudi Arabia lifts project bidding ban on crisis-hit Binladin Group”. The first one was a statement by Minister of Labor Mufrej Al-Haqbani who vowed to ensure that the Saudi Binladin Group keeps a promise to resolve wage issues, amid reports of workers at the company facing unpaid salaries and termination. This was said as reports of 10 company buses being set alight spread like wildfire through social media.

The dilemma of the Arab policymaker (Khaled Almaeena, Al Arabiya)

The Obama Doctrine expressed through an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg in the April issue of The Atlantic caused consternation and alarm to many in the Arab world. Many commentators, writers and those wielding political power were rattled. Social media was full of attacks by many trolls, including some who had never even heard of the magazine before.

Is there an Arab world? (Khaled Almaeena, Al Arabiya)

Is there an Arab world? That was the question posed by an American college professor as we sat across a table in an Egyptian seaside resort. My mind traversed the history books I have read, the events I have witnessed and the predicament we are going through across the Middle East.

‘Green Card’ for expatriates in Saudi Arabia is a strategic plan (Khaled Almaeena, Al Arabiya)

The “green card” plan disclosed by Deputy Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, second deputy premier and minister of defense, in an interview with Bloomberg, has been welcomed by many expatriates. The plan will help expatriates ease away from the tight hold of sponsors, many of whom have been exploiting both white and blue-collar workers.

Saudi Arabia must build new strategies to deal with the paradigm shift (Khaled Almaeena, Al Arabiya)

I don’t know why the Arabs get flustered and hot under the collar when an American official speaks out his mind. President Obama’s talk to the Atlantic magazine did that.

What are our priorities and issues in Saudi Arabia? (Khaled Almaeena, Al Arabiya)

I recently received a call from a media correspondent who asked me, among other things, what the priorities in our country are and what issues prevail in the minds of the Saudi public. I cannot speak for all, however I believe that any sensible citizen would be concerned about the economic fluctuations and political situations across the globe.
