The grand coalition between the Social Democrats and the Christian Democrats functioned effectively and smoothly. It lasted for a long time. Germany was an undisputed EU leader calling the shots in Europe. As recently as last year, the Chancellor’s picture appeared on the cover of Time magazine as the person of the year in 2015.
