What can Japanese cities teach us about living heritage? (Aaron Davis, WEF)

Japan's Mt Fuji, covered with snow, is seen through Shinjuku skyscrapers in Tokyo January 8, 2006. The recovery of Japan's economy has been helped by a strong recovery in exports and a rise in corporate profits that has filtered through to lower unemployment rates and raise incomes. The recovery has bolstered confidence in the stock market, where the Nikkei share average surged 40 percent in 2005.

Architects, urban planners and government policymakers often aspire to make Australian cities more like Copenhagen. But, for issues of heritage and conservation, we could broaden our view and learn a lot from Japan.
