According to “The Smartest Places on Earth: Why Rustbelts Are the Emerging Hotspots of Global Innovation,” a new book by Antoine van Agtmael and Fred Bakker, once-mighty industrial cities, decimated by their manufacturers’ flight to cheap labor, areleveraging their knowledge assets to thrive as newly emerging “brainbelts.”
