The contention over Afghan national identity card (Rustam Ali Seerat, South Asia Monitor)

The contention over the Afghan national identity card (Tazkeras) is back again as the country gears up for the Parliamentary elections. The issuance of electric identity card was delayed in the past because of the disagreements that had sprung up on the content that was to be displayed on the identity card, especially the ethnicity of its bearer. As the issue persists even as efforts are being made to streamline the population database for administrative purposes and convenience, the issue of mentioning of one’s ethnicity or not has divided the people of Afghanistan and the political class alike along three distinct strands of thought.
